One game idea I've decided to research further is my gem collecting one. This game will be part of 3D platformer genre. The story of this game is about a character who is obsessed with collecting shiny gems. The characters parents have banned him from collecting gems as his addiction has gotten out of control. Every morning, he sneaks out of the house to collect as many gems as he can before his parents wake up. The game's location will be set in a forest terrain. Four of the games main mechanics are running/jumping, time, gem collection, and undirected exploration.
The running mechanic will play a large role in my game because the player will be required to move fast. The more gems you collect the better your score will be. Jumping will help the player to reach gems on platforms or higher ground.
The time mechanic is also another big mechanic that will feature in the final game. At the start of the game, a timer will automatically start ticking down. The idea behind this mechanic is to make the player feel under pressure. I want to make a ticking noise start when the timer has only 10 seconds left. This timer will be displayed on-screen along with the number of gems collected while the player searches the map.
Collecting gems is how the player will score points. Gems will vary in colour and value, they will also make a noise and disappear when collected. There will be three different colour gems blue, green, and red. The valuable gems will be scarce and placed in more hidden locations on the map. This mechanic will make players seek out the valuable gems because they dramatically increase the overall score.
The final mechanic I want to include is undirected exploration. I won't be placing gems in a trail because I want to encourage exploration of the map. The player will feel more accomplished when they discover hidden locations. The lesser valuable gems will have a higher spawn rate than the more valuable ones, but the player will still be required to search the map to find any of them. I could make the gems spawn in different locations after each game and make more than one map to help keep the gameplay and exploration interesting.

Links That Helped With My Research
Hey Conor, I loved reading this post and I can't wait to see what you will do for your project. I'm really excited to see what you come up with and how you make the gems. I also wanted to thank you for the comment on my page, so thank you. Keep up the good work and again I can't wait until you have made the game to play it.
