Final Draft

Introduction This literature review will cover video game design and User Interfaces (UI). The review contains various articles which discuss UI research. Below it goes into detail about what users think, learning by design, the effect of UI, emotions to trigger UI adaptation, design implementation, measuring user experiences, usability patterns, and visualization techniques.  Stein C. Llanos (2011) stated v ideo games are trying to move away from the standard UI design. Moving away from the norm has lead to people wondering if the new or old standard UI design is better. Players like to have a minimal UI design because it looks aesthetically pleasing but prefer to have information on-screen that allows them to easily interact with a game world and its mechanics. When a minimal UI design seems natural to a games environment it does not necessarily make it the best way to present information.    Kristiadi, D.P.,  Udjaja , Y., Supangat, B., Prameswara, R.Y., Warnars, Harco Leslie  He

Researchers at Eindhoven University of Technology and the University of Genoa, discuss usability metrics to user-centered game design. The paper describes how difficult it is to measure a gaming experience. It also points out immersion and flow concepts as potential candidates for assessing gameplay. Flow is a name given by Csikszentmihalyi to a state of enjoyment where people are engrossed in the activity. It is concluded that it will take time before a generally agreed framework that describes digital games. They are developing a Game Experience Questionaire that will cover a wide variety of digital game experiences.  https://pure.tue.nl/ws/files/2944578/Metis215134.pdf (2) Ijsselsteijn, W., Nap, H., de Kort, Y. and Poels, K. Annotated Bibliography

This week we made a mindmap on Coggle. This tool helped the class brainstorm words relating to Multimedia. After using the mindmap I decided to look at articles about UI and video games in detail. I then wrote annotated bibliographies on articles I read.  (1) Stein C. Llanos The Norwegian School of Information Technology Schweigaardsgate 14 N-0185 Oslo +4797611459  steinllanos@nith.no  (2011)  Do Players Prefer Integrated User Interfaces? A Qualitative Study of Game UI Design Issues . Authors and researchers at the University of Bergen and The Norwegian School of Information technology studied different player attitudes in regards to user interfaces in games. In recent time video games have tried to moving away from the standard UI design. Moving away from standard UI design has raised the question, whether players prefer the old or new integrated UI design.  They conclude that players like having minimal UI as it's aesthetically pleasing but always prefer to have in

Multimedia Project Research

I love the idea that we get to choose what we do for our multimedia project. In my opinion, it's a great chance to make a nice portfolio piece. Unlike other assignments, we get to pick exactly what we want to make. Having many students in the group will allow us to develop a game to a much larger scale compared to last semester. From the get-go, I knew I wanted this to be the project I worked on for the rest of the semester. I've decided to take part in the large class group for my project who are making a game based on the 1916 Rising in Ireland. The finished game will be a 3D open world game, where you will play as a character that has to pass messages between key locations and people who were in the Rising. There will be 18 different people taking part in this project. Everyone has been designated their own individual roles that they need to fulfill. I will be taking care of all the graphic design work. I will have to keep in close contact with the project manager Chris
