Annotated Bibliography

This week we made a mindmap on Coggle. This tool helped the class brainstorm words relating to Multimedia.

After using the mindmap I decided to look at articles about UI and video games in detail. I then wrote annotated bibliographies on articles I read.

Authors and researchers at the University of Bergen and The Norwegian School of Information technology studied different player attitudes in regards to user interfaces in games. In recent time video games have tried to moving away from the standard UI design. Moving away from standard UI design has raised the question, whether players prefer the old or new integrated UI design.  They conclude that players like having minimal UI as it's aesthetically pleasing but always prefer to have information that allows them to interact with the game mechanics and game world. Having a minimal UI that seems natural to the game environment is not always the best way to present critical information.

This article is about how video game designers manage players to understand games that are long and complex. Good principals built into video games should also be applied to learning in schools. thirteen different principals are explored in detail. The author believes that good principals are built into games that are successful. Games show us that learning is not all just work. It is concluded that schools do not implement these principals due to the cost.

This paper presents research about the importance of a video games  User Interface, User Experience, and Gameplay Experience. A survey was conducted to learn more about the topic. It showed most of the players were males who ranged from 21-30. The game Tekken 7 is loved for it's UI, UX, and GX.
Increasing amounts of research have been directed towards the emotional and affective aspects of user experience in recent times. User Experience is anything a user can interact with. User Experience is the planning gone into a product's design. If a games UI and UX are good the user's Gameplay Experience will be enhanced.

Galindo, J.A., Dupuy-Chessa, S., Mandran, N. and Ceret, E. (May 2018) 'Using User Emotions to Trigger UI Adaptation', IEEE, , pp. 1.

Researchers categorized users emotions depending on their age and gender. The results are used for user interface problems and to infer users negative emotions. The paper concludes that users emotions can be categorized depending on what age and gender they are. They can also be categorized on UI aesthetics and usability levels. These experimental results based on emotions open up a large number of possibilities for UI evaluation.

This article is about how to provide a better method in designing a user interface. The article is pacifically based on a smartphone puzzle game called Saving Hero. It is concluded that interactive game design works well and is efficient. The Interface design methods discussed equip the smartphone game with superb operability, playability, and appreciation.

Unity Tutorial 05

This week's Unity tutorials showed me how to make a skybox, wind, fade screens, and how to improve the game environment. The first tutorial started by showing me how to add a sky to the game. I went onto the assets store and imported sky assets. To add the sky asset into the game, I then clicked on the "Windows" tab and chose the lighting settings option. From here I was able to drag and drop the different sky assets I downloaded. The next thing the tutorial showed me was how to add wind zones. I added wind to the in-game trees by clicking the "GameObject" tab. I then clicked on the 3D object tab and selected the wind zones option.  The second tutorial started by explaining how to add in-game objects that can be picked up of the ground. The example given in the tutorial was an axe stuck in a tree. First, you add in a cube and place it over the axe, then turn off the box collider so it becomes invisible. Game Brainstorm

Game Brainstorm  I got my first game idea after looking at endless runner games such as "Temple Run", "Subway Surfers", "Sonic Dash" and "Super Mario Run". I noticed a lot of these games in this genre are on Android and iOS devices. This got me thinking about creating a similar game for PC. The first of these games to become popular was "Temple Run" back in 2011. This game made the genre popular on mobile devices which later inspired the other endless runner games I mentioned. Endless running games have very simple controls, such as jumping over and dodging oncoming obstacles. A player's score is generally determined by how far they travel without hitting any obstacles. The games have simplistic controls but are difficult because you cannot stop the forward momentum of your character. Although these games have different art styles the gameplay is the same.  I think this would be a good type of game to make because the gameplay ...
